Workshops

Ideally these will be carried out with around 10 to 20 students between the ages of 8 to 14 years. A 1½ to 2 hour session to achieve the best results, this will allow me to give individual time to each student and for them to achieve the following targets:

  • Enjoying the freedom that percussion and music gives
  • Achieving a given goal
  • Appreciating rhythm and how it fits within music
  • Working with others to achieve a set team goal
  • Learning how to listen and distinguish between different rhythms and styles of music
  • Taking part in physical exercise
  • Having fun making music
  • Developing confidence

Section 1

Introduction to me and what we are going to do in the workshop.

The room will be set up with 10 work areas:

  • Electronic Drum Kit
  • Electronic Drum Kit
  • Acoustic Drum Kit
  • An electronic percussion sample pad
  • Bongos
  • Steel Timpani
  • Congas
  • Rota Toms
  • Various Hand Percussion
  • Various Hand Percussion

I will then demonstrate what I want them to try and do at each area

Exploring various electronic sounds available through percussion pads etc.

Playing basic rhythms on Bongos, Congas, Rota Toms and Steel Timpani

Having fun experimenting with different sounds created by various hand percussion

They will then spend an allotted time on each piece of percussion moving around the room until they have completed the circuit.

We will be aim to building up to a basic pop/rock rhythm on a drum kit.

Section 2

Discuss Drumming as a hobbie or a career.

Give a demonstration of different styles and rhythms on both Drum Kit and Percussion.

Question and Answer session.

Section 3

Carry out a percussion rhythm ensemble with everyone taking part.


Evening Workshops for Parents and Friends

Andy is also available for evening workshops with Parents and friends. This a relaxed and informal evening where parents get involved and also have the opportunity to ask Andy questions about his career and life on the road.
